created all sorts of records as a sire from his base at Cambridge Stud
NZ but initially had to battle for recognition. His son Devaraja
faced a similar predicament when he first went to stud, but
as DAVID BAY reports in this profile, the young SA-based stallion made
people sit up and take notice when he had four individual juvenile stakes
winners in his second crop.
SOMETIMES an unlucky break for one person
can prove a windfall for another, Oakside Park Stud’s Trevor Harrington and
his sire Devaraja (NZ) are proof of that.
Trevor, a dentist,
purchased Oakside Park at Hahndorf about 18 years ago and although he had
grown up going to pony club and then graduated to hunting, he knew very
little about the thoroughbred industry.
“The property has
a lovely old German homestead which was renovated by the previous owner who
had also set the place up for thoroughbreds,” Trevor said.
“When we came here the plan was to take a few horses on agistment but we were approached to
stand a stallion, Southland Boy, and the stud situation has gradually
