STARTING from barrier 13 in the 18-horse field, Mummify jumped straight to the front and had crossed the field with a circuit of Caulfield to run. As nothing was willing to take him on for the lead Danny Nikolic decided to control the race from the front. Grand Armee settled second early with Platinum Scissors having the perfect run right behind the leader. Hug's Dancer travelled wide in the leading group with In Time's Eye given a perfect run by Damien Oliver, always in the first five and with cover.

As the field straightened for home Nikolic went for broke on the race favourite and none of those close to him could respond. Mummify was tiring in the final 50m but had a big enough break to hold on and win by three-quarters of a length from the unlucky Grey Song, who came through the field from near the rear and had his momentum disturbed on numerous occasions, especially coming around the turn and at the 200m mark.

Distinctly Secret went one place better in this year's race after his fourth in 2002. Kerrin McEvoy settled him mid-field on the rails and he produced a strong run from the 600m where he began to ease around those in front. Though Mummify was tiring, Distinctly Secret never really looked like picking him up. This was a very strong performance by Mummify to win his third Gr.1 race from 22 starts as he did all the work in front and the others had their chance to run him down.
