AS EXPECTED the Sydney filly Shamekha led the 11 runners and set a quick
pace through the early and mid stages of the race after being scrubbed up out
of the barriers. Damien Oliver settled the eventual winner, Special Harmony, in
seventh position one off the rail. He encountered some trouble rounding the
final part of the home turn where Special Harmony was squeezed up between the
tiring Bahamian Star on the outside and Tully Bellotto on the inner who was
also rolling about under extreme pressure. The situation was made worse as
Shamekha who was also tiring and had moved off the fence was in direct line
with that being taken by Special Harmony.
At the 200m mark Special Harmony, who was travelling well, burst through
a gap created when Santissima drifted wider to the outside of Shamekha and put
the race beyond doubt in a few strides. Special Harmony ran away to win by 2.25
lengths.
Hinting ran on out wide from second last to take second whilst Spurcent,
who had gone from last at the 400m point to being first in the early part of
the straight by railing through inside the whole field, hung on for third.
