UMRUM, the winner of this event in 1999 and 2000 set up a good pace early crossing from a wide gate. Luke Currie allowed Roman Arch to settle back in fourth last place. From the 800m point Currie began to move steadily forward on the outside of the field so that Roman Arch was hitting the front on straightening. Making use of Roman Arch's light weight, he was handicapped at 52.5 kg on a 51kg limit, Currie went for home and though Fields of Omagh was making steady progress he was never going to run down the winner given the difference in weights. Fields of Omagh carried 57kg.

Roman Arch had 1.75 lengths to spare from Fields of Omagh at the finish to give Luke Currie his first Gr.1 victory. Early leader, Umrum hung on for third, a further .25 lengths away.
