EXCEED AND EXCEL led as expected and set a strong pace. In Top Swing settled well in fourth place through the middle stages about three lengths behind the leader. Hugh Bowman went for home on Exceed and Excel rounding the turn and put a space on his rivals but Noel Callow railed through behind him on In Top Swing and eased off the rail on straightening to mount a challenge. Exceed and Excel, who had missed some work in the days leading into the race, could not respond and In Top Swing quickly passed him though hotly pursued by Face Value who had trailed In Top Swing through along the rail before moving out to challenge.

Though Face Value tried hard and was pulling ground in the last 100m In Top Swing had enough in hand to win by three-quarters of a length and give Noel Callow his first victory in a Gr.1 race. Kempinsky put in a good effort to run on for third after being trapped three wide for the entire race. He was just ahead of Ambulance who did not seem suited on the tight Caulfield circuit and by being cluttered up between horses.
