TSUIMAI was sent out favourite of the nine runners on the strength of his strong win in the Gloaming Stakes-Gr.2 (1800m) a fortnight before. Zac Purton took Tsuimai to the lead and attempted to control the race in front. Terracotta Bay travelled second some three lengths behind the leader. Corey Brown settled Niello in eighth place well off the speed in the early part of the race.

On straightening, Terracotta Bay challenged Tsuimai but was quickly repelled. However Tsuimai could not respond to the challenge of Niello and November Dreaming, who had both been making steady progress from the 600m point, and they swept past the leader with 150m to go. Niello got the better of November Dreaming in the final 50m to win by 0.2 of a length with Tsuimai third, a further two lengths way. The placegetters finished well clear of the remaining six runners.
