THE third of the Gr.1 races on the Randwick card saw another inspired ride by Corey Brown to complete a treble of Gr.1 wins for the afternoon. As is usually the case a large field accepted for this year's race. Favourite, Grand Armee began quickly from barrier three of the 20 runners and contested the early lead before dropping back to a comfortable trailing position in fourth spot as stablemates Osca Warrior and Britt's Best ensured a solid tempo.

Clangalang, last season's AJC Derby winner, was originally being set for a tilt at the major cups in Melbourne but an injury scare interrupted his preparation. He had not run for four weeks and had also drawn badly in 17. Brown allowed Clangalang to settle amongst the last five horses and though making some progress from the 600m point, he elected to move through the pack rather than going around the body of the field.

With about 300m to go Grand Armee, who was travelling well, burst past the tiring leaders and was running away from his immediate challengers, Sportsman and Forum Floozie. At the 100m point Clangalang who had continued his steady progress was driven through a gap between Sportsman, who was weakening, and Forum Floozie, who was battling on with her light weight even though she had been trapped wide throughout the race. In the final 50m Clangalang gathered up Grand Armee to win running away.
