DANEHILL
three-year-old colt Exceed and Excel was having only his eighth career start
when he stepped out for the Invitation Stakes (Dubai Racing Club Cup). His
previous racing had been in the clockwise direction and Caulfield is notorious
for bringing the first time Sydney visitors undone.
It was
also his first time against open age horses, his first time over further than
1200m and the first time in a race with a rider other than Hugh Bowman, who
could not ride at the 52kg allotted the colt in this 1400m handicap. Corey
Brown who rode half a kilogram overweight replaced Bowman. At the end of the
1400m it was the first time the 1400m at Caulfield had been covered so quickly,
1.21.20, a track record.
Exceed
and Excel jumped brilliantly from barrier five and went straight to the front
from the other two three-year-olds in the race, Lago Delight and Scaredee Cat.
On straightening for home he bounded away and had one and three-quarter lengths
to spare from Reactive, who had travelled well in fifth place one off the rail,
whilst Titanic Jack stormed home wide from mid-field, to take third.
