Outstanding sprinting mare Spinning Hill made it consecutive wins in the MVRC Manikato Stakes with a very soft win in the 2003 running of this event.

Patrick Payne, who rode the mare to victory the previous year, was again at his patient best settling the mare just off the pace and one off the rail trailing the race favourite Yell who was sharing the lead with Lovely Jubly. The pace slowed in the middle stages of the race and True Glo moved to sit three wide in the lead group.

The eight-horse field was tightly packed at the 400m point and Spinning Hill was back second last but within easy striking distance. Payne eased the mare off the heals of Yell and to the outside of True Glo with 200m to run and she quickly accelerated past the leaders and was eased down to win by 1.25 lengths from True Glo.

This was Spinning Hill's third Gr.1 victory and like her previous two was at her first up race run from a spell.
