PRIZED Gem provided Prized with his second Gr.1 winner when the four-year-old mare dived between runners to arrive just in time to defeat gutsy Scenic son Majestic Avenue. It rewarded a grand ride by Michael Rodd, the 20-year-old becoming the first apprentice to win this race in 21 years since Jim Cassidy impressed those behind Nebo Lodge with his win on Four Crowns. Longshot Nauders was inches away third in a crowded finish. The previous successful four-year-old mare was Barbut Delcia in 1993 and you must go back to the 1970s for the previous ones, Mode and Herminia. The modern female extremities are provided by three-year-old Queen's Road (1982) and seven-year-old Limitless (1987).

The leading earner of the recently deceased Kris S, Prized won the 1989 Breeders' Cup Turf and has commuted between the USA and NZ since 1996 and again returns to Fayette Park. For the 2002 northern season he relocated from Dixiana to Spendthrift. Sale of Century, the provider of Prized's first Australian Gr.1 in the 1999 Rosehill Guineas, also ran in the Cup but finished 11th. Prepared by Murray Baker, Prized Gem was bred by the late Barry Moreton. The Queensland breeder died two years ago and Prized Gem is raced by his widow Billie. The Cup winner's damsire is Noble Bijou, an unraced half-brother to Allez France. Prized Gem started a $5 favourite on the strength of her fighting win in the Prime Minister's Cup and third in the O'Shea - both 2400m at Gr.2.
