IN 2001
it had been the Crown Lodge 1-2 of Crawl and Hire and the 109th edition
produced an even more dramatic quinella by future residents of Jon Haseler's
Glenlogan Park. It was a 1-2 fly-past of the class runners Show a Heart and the
year older Falvelon, 56kg topweights in Australia's richest contest at 1400m.
Approaching the final stages they roared past the others. The son of Brave
Warrior and the warrior son of Alannon zoomed home in tandem to provide a
priceless moment, the others headed by the always-wide Kingsgate. What a grand
way for Show a Heart to sign off! As so often in his career, he drew wide and
after being second last of the 20 Danny Nikolic rode him for luck near the
inside around the bend meeting Falvelon (14th at the 400m) halfway down the
straight. Rival jockey Oliver paid the winner a compliment in saying he was
amazed any horse could out-finish the dual Hong Kong International Sprint
winner Falvelon - let along one conceding him age at level weights.
If Show
a Heart's 56kg seems no great impost, it was enough for the four-year-old to
concede 19 others weight. Save the one collected by three-year-old filly Dane
Ripper, four-year-olds have won every Stradbroke from 1994. Yet Since All Our
Mob's success with 55kg in that year, none had carried more than Danasinga's
54.5kg. The age record is 59kg by Kingster and Triton. This wonderful success
capped the long career of 61-year-old trainer Barry Miller who was given Show a
Heart to train by breeder Ross Cutts and his wife Judith.
