LOVELY Jubly joined Juanmo, Slight Chance, Aragen and Shame as female Sires' winners within a decade (actually making it 5-10 for the girls - the 1999 edition was abandoned). The Magic Millions winner appeared the one to beat going into the race and Prebble had no hesitation in taking the $3 elect to the front when none of the other 12 runners volunteered for the role. The upshot was that Lovely Jubly had the race in her keeping a long way out and coasted home to win by almost two lengths from Sir Breakfast with a well beaten Saddler's Silk just grabbing third ahead of Top Echelon. The grey filly's time of 1:21.4 clipped half a second from Juanmo's race record, the fastest winning time by a male is Dracula's 1:22.1.

Newcastle conditioner David Throsby and his wife Jo paid $36,000 for the first crop daughter of Oaklands' Danehill horse Lion Hunter at the 2001 Magic Millions. The filly bred and sold by Dan Hayes through his Carnation Lodge subsequently collected the MM 2YO race. Lovely Jubly's dam Jaboulet (by the wonderfully versatile NZ sire Vice Regal), won four Sydney and Brisbane races to 1850m under the care of Paul Sutherland. The filly is named for a bit of London slang meaning beaut, exemplified by David Jason's character in English sitcom Only Fools and Horses, and more recently by brash television cook Jamie Oliver.
