MON Mekki rounded out a big day for the Danzig tribe, as Danehill's grandaughter Lovely Jubly had earlier won the QTC Sires' Produce. At 50/1, the 51st Eagle Farm Oaks winner is the equal longest-priced winner with 1966 winner Blue Roc - no other winner has started longer than 16/1. This the first Gr.1 winner for Gerald Ryan since he was successful with Arctic Scent in the Queensland Oaks six years ago. He also won a SA Oaks with Ramyah. Ryan also saddled Palidamah and although she was one of the favourites she could finish only 12th. Mon Mekki was settled around eighth by Paul Hammersley before providing the 18-year-old apprentice with his 73rd race success and seventh in town - at his first Gr.1 attempt. The previous apprentice to win was Jim Andrews on Bright Shadow 34 years earlier. Night Chaser was also game but no match for the winner. Quays reprised her Australian Oaks third and didn't quite finish her race off after missing the start.

Mon Mekki is by Mukddaam, the Danzig half-brother to Nashwan and Unfuwain. He worked in Victoria for six seasons before his death in 1999, this the first graded winner for the horse imported by Dizzy and Norman Carlyon for Muranna. Nelson Bunker Hunt and Queen Elizabeth II contributed to her pedigree. The oil-rich Hunt bred Mon Mekki's third dam Stenorette from a mating of his Waikato Stud-based My Friend Paul and Flight Stakes winner Better Comment. England's Queen bred and raced Mukddaam's dam Height of Fashion, from her English 1000 Guineas winner Highclere.
