Mr Bureaucrat proved adept at his first attempt beyond 1800m, over which this versatile galloper had won the Hollindale Stakes when stepping up 400m from his win in the Gr.2 Sir Byrne Hart Stakes at his first run from a let-up. Others to complete a wfa Hollindale-Doomben Cup double in recent years were Rough Habit (twice), Durbridge, Danewin and Might and Power. Well ridden in all three wfa wins by Adrian Robinson, he settled the six-year-old at the rear in the Cup with Danyon early. After turning sixth out wide, they were right there to challenge when Freemason took over the lead early on in the straight. Mr Bureaucrat was in front 150m out and gamely held off three-year-old Galroof. The filly appeared cramped for room between the winner and Freemason inside the 200m. Her rider Stathi Katsidis lodged an unsuccessful objection. Freemason notched his fourth placing in a wfa Gr.1 over the autumn, his only miss being a fourth in the Tancred.

This success by the grandson of Lord Ballina completes something of a circle as Bureaucracy's sire won a Doomben 10,000. Also a grand training feat for Warwick Hailes who won a pair of 10,000s with Prince Trialia. He races the winner of more than $812,000 with a group including the gelding's co-breeder Judy Somers, who with her late husband, Ray, and Dale Casson bred the gelding at Jacaranda Park, west of Sydney and not far from where Hailes trains at Hawkesbury. Buyers had their chance at him as he went to the 1997 Sydney Classic Sale, leaving unsold at $16,000.
