She's
Archie reversed her defeat in the shorter Australasian Oaks. As she had in the
Australasian Oaks, the filly came from well back to challenge Tully Thunder in
the straight. This time she would not be denied and her perseverance was
rewarded as she and Peter Mertens outstayed their Victoria Park conquerer in
the final 50m. Gold Lottey was no match for the first pair but fought on well
after taking the lead before the final bend. Brett Prebble, who replaced Damien
Oliver on Tully Thunder believed his mount just failed to stay the additional
400m. Mertens has an affinity with recent Adelaide Gr.1s winning the 2001 South
Australian Derby and Adelaide Cup on Big Pat and Apache King. She's Archie is
the first Gr.1 winner for trainer Darren Weir.
The win
of She's Archie adds further lustre to her sire Archway, the former shuttler
from Coolmore to Barree Stud, who will be standing the 2002 season at The
Independent Stallion Station. The Thatching sprinter sired Grand Archway,
winner of the Victoria and Australian Oaks. Both Adelaide run Oaks eluded her,
however, when second and beaten on her merits behind Episode. Archway's other
Gr.1 win was supplied by Rose Archway in the 2001 Australian Oaks. Weir has
spelled She's Archie for the spring. He says she has a good turn of foot and
grinds away, which suggests a chance in a Caulfield Cup. Weir was a farrier for
Terry O'Sullivan at Stawell before taking out a licence six years ago. After
outgrowing his stables at Stawell he recently moved to Ballarat to accommodate
a team approaching 50.
