The
first southern generation of Pentire stepped up to centre stage as the Dan
Nikolic partnered Pantani held on gamely to win narrowly over Silver Baron in
an all grey finish, rare indeed at Gr.1 level. Pantani was caught wide near the
lead in the straight the first time and taken around Silver Baron to race
outside the leader Thunder Hawk. Nikolic was able to trail in third as
Mountbatten went around them 1200m out. Silver Baron chased fiercely and just
failed, although he was within 1-1/2 lengths as the winner took the lead at the
top of the straight. Nikolic's previous Gr.1 success came aboard Sudurka on
Victoria Derby day, but the wait was longer for Robbie Laing - since Perfect
Bliss in the 1000 Guineas of 1983.
Pentire
is also the sire of Pentastic, placed in both the Victorian and Australian
Derbys. Pantani prepped with a second to Grey Song in the Victoria St
Leger-Gr.3, the enigmatic winner having an Adelaide trip aborted due to a
virus. Laing found Pantani at the NZ Premier and secured him for $NZ52,500. The
transaction was over swiftly to clear the Karaka ring for the next lot, now
known as Don Eduardo, with the Australian Derby winner-to-be setting a yearling
sale record of $NZ3.6m. Markham, the 1997 SA Derby winner (and third in the
Melbourne Cup), is a relative of Pentire through the Shadai-owned stallion's
third dam Hardiemma - the dam of English Derby winner Shirley Heights. Pentire
first shuttled in 1997 as the foundation sire for Rich Hill Stud at Matamata.
