The body of evidence which attests to the ability of a stallion's progeny to run faster immediately upon his death, or distant relocation, is swelled by the case of Honor Grades. The day before the 14 year-old Danzig son was found dead at Darby Dan Farm, Honor Bound became his first southern Gr.1 winner in the Easter Handicap in Auckland, and 14 days later another of his daughters defeated the males in the WA Derby.

Honor Lap had won the WA Oaks-Gr.2 along the way and was a $6 chance in the Derby, defeating $2.60 favourite Lord Mason by length. Storm Fille ($4.20), the Thunder Gulch filly to chase Honor Lap home in the Oaks, again chased her home in third. Our Bulbaa emerged to supply the speed, the fillies in midfield and the favourite a long way back. Paul King took Honor Lap around the leaders in the straight while Paul Harvey searched for short-cuts on Storm Fille. Finally in the clear, Lord Mason rocketed home but the filly easily held him off. Honor Lap hails from the final crop of Honor Grades on his five years at Haunui Farm, near Auckland from 1993. A $25,000 yearling in Melbourne, Honor Lap is the second foal of a non-winning mare by Conquistarose, the latter working out of Haunui before his relocation to the Philippines.

Not for the first time has the WA Derby found itself in the autumn. The previous time was in 1993, when Beaujolais Boy won an edition run in May, in the same season as the final 'Australian Derby' staged by the WATC in Perth.
