Soon after the announcement that Dehere would resume shuttling ≠ to Arrowfield - his four year-old son Defier provided his second Australian Gr.1 success. Defier closed late to win narrowly but decisively from Grand Lodge son Freemason with Emission an also-game third. The win gave the Guy Walter a second carnival Gr.1 success - the first came with Republic Lass in the Oaks. They came a few weeks after Walter lost his galloper of a lifetime, Tie the Knot, to retirement. In the wake of Defier's maiden Group success he was swiftly labelled as the stable's next wfa star, but that's underestimating the acceleration and potential of Republic Lass. The QE Stakes was expected to be successfully defended by Shogun Lodge, but the best southern son of Grand Lodge appeared to be lame after leading just one of the 13 runners home.

Defier is raced by Jim and Madeline Koureas and John and Gloria Murphy. He was bred by Geoff and Beryl White and sold by the couple for $80,000. The buyer was Anthony Cummings, but he lost the horse when outed. Dehere was sold by Coolmore to the Japanese Bloodhorse Breeders' Association just into the 1999 season, and left just 12 foals from 17 matings at his fifth Australian year. Deputy Minster's champion two-year-old son has 13 southern stakeswinners including Belle du Jour.
