Neville McBurney has been acknowledged as a master trainer of stayers for some years from his HQ in tranquil Wyong. But until Henderson Bay arrived just in time to prevent Mr Prudent joining The Barb, Carbine, Mosaic and Tie the Knot as a winner of successive Sydney Cups, half a lifetime in search of Australia's most important staying handicap north of the Murray River had resulted in a pair of thirds by Praise Indeed. His major runner Lord Hybrow was scratched in 1990 due to a heavy track.

McBurney's sense of history and his craft would have almost certainly had him happily split the finish with George Hanlon, who, along with Bart Cummings, is about the best trainer of stayers there has been. But after coming from 11th mid-race, Henderson Bay and Darryl McLellan managed to get the bob in right on the line from the Corey Brown-partnered Mr Prudent (14th 800m) after an almighty battle. It handed Hanlon his third runner-up prize - the others Dark Suit and Lady Dignitas to go with his pair of wins. At the other end of the scale, rising star conditioner Cliff Brown provided the close-up third Spirit of Westbury. The winner of the 137th Cup is raced by Michael and Gayle Clifford and was bred at Cambridge by Janis Carlsen who sold him to McBurney as a four-year-old for $NZ45,000. Unsurprisingly, the next target is the Melbourne Cup.
