Canny Lad was a highly talented sprinter-miler, although a few might remember that he started a 7/4 favourite in the 1991 Victoria Derby when 10th to Fire Oak off a gutsy third in the W.S. Cox Plate. A little more than a decade on and his seventh crop daughter has won the country's leading filly classic. Republic Lass isn't her sire's first classic winner, Dodge providing that in the Derby in Queensland. This the first Star Kingdom line success in a Randwick classic since Ivory's Irish (by another Bletchingly son, Best Western) and Circles of Gold (by Marscay) collected the double in 1995. The stamina probably enhanced by the hulking presence of the formidable Cox' Ridge as maternal grandsire, the Turn-to grandson a Gr.1 winner best at a mile and up. Her second dam, Cascapedia won 10 from 19 including the Vanity-Gr1 and second to Crystal Waters in the 1977 Hollywood Gold Cup-Gr1.The Dean Fleming-bred Oaks winner settled fifth by Glen Boss off a good speed provided by Damaschino (fourth). The winner's interference of Sixty Seconds (fifth) near the 300m cost the $3.10 favourite second place and saw Boss suspended. Elegant Fashion and Quays were always handy and fought on courageously although they had no answer to the winner's acceleration. Republic Lass ($3.30) shot to the top of the ANZ filly rankings as a stayer in the wake of her grand Oaks victory.
