The most emphatic Lightning winner in some years is the second Australian Gr.1 winner for Bluebird's French Gr.I winner Dolphin Street, a Victorian resident commuting to France after shuttling from Coolmore from 1995-99. The 48th Lightning winner is raced by Sandy Tait and Jill Nivison, the brother and sister breeder-owners of Tie the Knot, also conditioned for them by Guy Walter. It was the first graded success for Spinning Hill, a close second to dual Hong Kong Sprint hero Falvelon in last year's Doomben 10,000.

Spinning Hill became the first female winner since Isca at three in 1999, the previous four-year-old mare to win was Special 11 years earlier. All-up there have been 15 female winners. Ridden for the first time by Stephen Arnold, Spinning Hill was backed to half her opening quote of 20/1 before rushing home a half-length in advance of three-year-old Mistegic in 57.15 on the rain-affected straight 1000m. Another three-year-old, Chong Tong, led the flat side horses home in third, ahead of the 2001 third Black Bean. The 13/4 favourite North Boy was never in contention on the stand side as Mistegic led, Oamaru Force heading the flat side.
