A strong
Northerly and one hell of a storm, went the Age headline and it was entirely
appropriate after the drama of the 80th Plate. The first pair sandwiched the
race's lone three-year-old, Viscount, 50m out but, after the multiple mugging,
stewards declared it hadn't affected the result. Perhaps the afterthought
protest by Greg Childs on Sunline, after Kerrin McEvoy's objections against
Northerly and Sunline, might have clouded things. Chief Steward Des Gleeson and
his panel let the placings stand. All three showed great courage.
Sunline
was just the third horse to attempt three-straight, before Kingston Town
succeeded in 1982 Young Idea had run third to Ajax and Royal Chief in 1938.
Fred Kersley is a winner at his first attempt, Damien Oliver now 2-10, having
also won on Dane Ripper in 1997. Northerly is the first to sweep the Feehan
(beating Sunline by a long head), the Underwood, Yalumba (Caulfield) Stakes and
Cox Plate. Arlington Million hero Silvano was four lengths astern in fourth,
the German horse perhaps not fully recovered from a foot abscess picked up in
quarantine.
The
2:05.84 was 2.3 seconds outside Might and Power's record, the final 800m in
48.26 and 400m in 24.74s. But the track was dead and the first 1240m run at a
snail-like 1:17.58 after none attempted a speed duel with Sunline. Viscount was
second almost throughout. To make it 5-5 at Gr.1 Northerly was third through
the first 1200m, angled out wider after the 800m but failed to respond
until charging home in the straight.
The North Bell update is that after slipping twins to End Sweep, she stayed at
Arrowfield to visit Flying Spur.
