Sheila Laxon is the second woman to prepare the winner at her first attempt. Likewise it was jockey Scott Seamer's first attempt, after having also won the Queensland Oaks narrowly on Ethereal. After Sky Heights failed by a nose, Oliver unsuccessfully protested that the narrow 1999 Caulfield Cup winner was impeded by the $8 equal favourite rounding the home turn. A slow track saw riders scouting wide and Seamer and Oliver the widest. Ethereal (10th 800m) and Sky Heights (12th) at that point stalking the leaders. Rhys McLeod angled the always handy Celestial Choice to the lead on straightening by taking a short cut. It almost secured a huge upset for the race's sole apprentice. They still led 60m out. The speed had been even, but was beefed-up as Inaflury took charge of Jim Cassidy midrace and set up a 4-length lead into the last 1000m. She hung on for a gallant sixth, just behind Hill of Grace and Bush Padre. Inaflury, the 1999 third, was co-favourite with the winner and King Keitel (7th).

Rhythm's Oaks winners from Sir Tristram mares, Ethereal & Tapildo, are from the first of his four Cambridge crops. The BC Juvenile and Travers winner has one stakes winner from four seasons in Japan and one from a similar sojourn at Ashford, before his sale to California. Romanee Conti foaled a colt to Marju a few days before the Cup and goes to Montjeu at Windsor Park, her mum Richebourg carrying to Zabeel. Ethereal will actually be four on November 16, but officially the ninth four year-old mare to land the Cup in the past 30 years.
