The
fifth One Thousand Guineas win for Bart Cummings and also the second straight
for jockey Stephen Arnold, the 56th edition also marked by a 1-2 finish by
Danehills, the sire supplying four of the 14 fillies, Flight Stakes second
Moonflute and La Lagune missing the frame. Last year it had been the first
generation Flying Spurs (by Danehill), All Time High and Ponton Flyer, who
supplied a quinella. Magical Miss was a $520,000 Easter purchase for Bill and Rhonda
Wyllie as the Perth developer spent $2.9m on yearlings. Cummings describes her
as owning an enormous girth and a terrific action. His first Gr.1 winner since
Rogan Josh in the 1999 Melbourne Cup equals the five 1000 Guineas winners
prepared by Tommy Smith between 1963-85. Cummings's other winners were Anna
Rose in 1963 (dh), Tristanagh (1990), Richfield Lady (1993) and earlier
Danehill winner Dashing Eagle (1996).
The
formerly named Houdini's Lass (later changed to Magical Miss) was seventh and
three wide on settling from gate nine. Still there at the 400m, the 12/1 chance
reeled in Ha Ha and wore the 2/1 favourite down. A green Li Lo Lil edged out
True Jewels to grab third. Ha Ha and True Jewels were the victims of wide
barriers, Jim Cassidy electing to lead rather than be trapped wide. Hooked Bid
(CAN) sold for $180,000 and $60,000 at the Easter Broodmare sales of 1999 and
2000, the latter buyer Emirates Park, to offer her Desert Prince yearling colt
at Easter. She then missed to Secret Savings (by Seeking the Gold).
