Northerly became the first to win the treble of the J.F. Feehan-Gr.2, Underwood-Gr.1 and Caulfield Stakes, and the13th to take the Underwood-Caulfield double. Lord did it twice, others including Hall Mark, Ajax, Contempler, Gay Icarus, How Now, Tristarc, Bonecrusher and Almaarad. Damien Oliver controlled the race on Northerly from the front, the high class WA pair setting a slowish tempo - the first 1400m in 1:27.53. The lone three-year-old Evander must have been surprised to be third on settling and then second to the 450m. Oliver sprinted the $1.90 favourite away on straightening and Northerly won his fourth Gr.1 softly, and without any of the histrionics of the Underwood.

Shogun Lodge finished gamely to close within -3/4 of a length for his ninth Gr.1 second, two in this race. His finish was blunted when he was flushed out earlier than Glen Boss would have wanted by Native Jazz (sixth) 600m out. It was only after a hairline fracture of his off-fore sesamoid was diagnosed, that we found just how courageous the Shogun had been. It probably occurred as he and Native Jazz raced tightly into the bend and could sideline him for up to six months. Five-year-olds have won the past six, Juggler starting the streak in 1996. Oliver had previously won on Naturalism in 1993 and Danewin ('95). Last year he was second on Shogun Lodge, beaten a nose as Glen Boss scored on Sky Heights.
