International flavour here with Octagonal's first Gr.1 winner arriving ahead of Seeking the Gold-Let's Elope son, Ustinov, and Nureyev colt Pure Theatre. Lonhro won in a style that would equal any of the previous 120 winners of this 2000 Guineas equivalent. History will be the final arbiter of this Guineas field but it surpasses anything I''ve seen. On a dead track, the Guineas reversed the trend favouring on-speed horses. Magic Hatter set a fair tempo, the first 1000m in 61.65. Always wide, Lonhro was last of the 15 into the straight, those closest to him Ustinov, Spring Champion hero Viking Ruler and Royal Code - a great fifth after also being trapped wide. Pure Theatre wasn't far ahead but sprinted quickly to head off Ebony Night, Magic Hatter and Magic Albert a 100m out, but was immediately passed by a rushing Lonhro and, close to the post, Ustinov. Viking Ruler finished fast after obtaining a run inside Ebony Night, but just failed to catch Pure Theatre. Ebony Night held on gamely for sixth.

Chasing his fourth Gr.1 win, Lonhro's stablemate Viscount failed, finishing tenth as a $4.20 elect after being fifth for home. He was untroubled in winning the Stutt Stakes at his left-handed debut but Caulfield is different. Forget he ran. The Inghams also won with Procul Harum in 1989, but for John Hawkes and Darren Gauci - third on Octagonal - it was their first Guineas success.
