For the second Saturday in a row in Sydney the Eight Carat dynasty bought new riches: in the George Main-Gr.1 it was Diamond Lover's grandson Viscount, through Antwerp, this time another of the Ellerslie Railway-Gr.1 winner's daughters in Tristalove. The Frank Feng-bred Viking Ruler was consigned by Cambridge at Easter 2000 and the sale-topping bid of $1.5 million, through NZ Bloodstock, saw the colt syndicated, the Roundtable group headed by Bob Emery and Sir Patrick Hogan.

Viking Ruler was still very green for Len Beasley, but a wonderful burst of acceleration overcame problems caused by waywardness on the tight inner-track. The race was shortened to 1800m but it made no difference to the result as he would have only won even more easily over the usual 2000m on the main track. As for Beasley, it was first win in this race for Clarry Conners. Danehill now has four, the others Danewin, Nothin' Leica Dane and Magic of Sydney. Viking Ruler is his 41st individual Gr.1 winner worldwide. Evander again showed he probably won't be completely happy until he reaches 2400m, and Silver Baron and Sircarn Damon were also not disgraced. Tristalove has a two-year-old filly by Danehill - named Diamond Like, and foaled a yearling brother before going to Grand Lodge.
