This Epsom was a stand-alone version at 1400m because of major renovations to the main Randwick track, and the all-weather surface proved less effective at stopping the backmarkers as has been the case in several recent big mile events on the main course. Final Fantasy gave most of the allowed 14 runners a start from the 600m and brained them with a flashing run out wide, the race set up for backmarkers by a combination of a hot pace - the first 600m in 34.92s on a dead track which by race seven was cutting-up. Kingsgate fought on gamely from second at the turn, but had no answer for the winnerπs sprint. Crown Lodge entries Crawl and Hire whizzed home for third and fourth, just ahead of the mares On Type, who ran boldly, Belle du Jour and Nanny Maroon.

Final Fantasy is the second Gr.1 winner for Hardwicke Stud favourite Chimes Square, the other being Chimes Zam. Malcolm Chung bred the six-year-old, whom he races with his wife Debbie. The Villiers-Gr.2 winner and luckless Doncaster-Gr.1 ninth is a brother to Padfoot Charlie, races in similar interests, and is also prepared by Bruce Cross at Warwick Farm. Fantastique has a juvenile colt by Strategic named Rouge Homme and last spring foaled a filly to Sri Pekan.
