Waterhouse collected her sixth Metropolitan, the Len Beasley-partnered Dress
Circle following Te Akau Nick (1992), Electronic (1995), Hula Flight (1996), In
Enjoyment (1998) and Coco Cobanna (2000) into the first dozen to win from
Tulloch Lodge. Dress Circle continued another hot sequence as the sixth
successive collector of the Colin Stephen Stakes and Metrop double, both races
run away from the closed Randwick main track, the Gr.3 lead-up shortened to
2200m at Warwick Farm and the Metrop to 2400m of Randwickπs All-weather
(inner) turf track. One of six Waterhouse entries, Dress Circle tracked
stablemate Mulan Princess to the turn, sprinted well clear and held on from
Danyon, whose run petered out. Nearest of the other Waterhouse entries was the
one-paced Consolidator in sixth.
The 18th
individual Gr.1 winner by Zabeel, Dress Circle is a product of the Williams
familyπs Little Avondale. He is raced by a group headed by publisher Peter
Horitz, the trainer paying $100,000 for him at Easter, 1998. Dress Circle
wasnπt entered for the Melbourne Cup but has come a long way in this
preparation, winning against maidens and one-metro win horses a few days before
the end of last season. Flight Queen foaled a colt to Pins four days before the
race and stays in-house to be served by Towkay.
