Northerly won his third Gr.1 on a seven day back-up, fresh from his defeat of Sunline in the Feehan Stakes-Gr.2 at his first Moonee Valley tryout. At Caulfield, Aka Bilk set an honest tempo before being set upon just inside the home straight by King Keitel, Hit the Roof and Northerly. The gifted Perth five-year-old hung down towards the rail crowding the other three as he reached the lead forcing Damien Oliver to kid to him on one rein. Northerly responded to hold out Universal Prince, the Australian Derby winner rocketing home to take second, a nose ahead of Kaapstad Way - the latter reprising his third of 12 months earlier.

For Fred Kersley, Northerlyπs run posed questions. At the line, however, this freakish Serheed son seemed to relish his work. Oliverπs first Underwood came after several minor placings and supplied his 52nd Gr.1 win, and second for the afternoon - the other on Mr Murphy. North Boy, North Bellπs three-year-old to Roryπs Jester, had the chance to precede his big (half) brotherπs Underwood three races earlier, but the talented Ascot Vale-Gr.2 winner faded to third in the Guineas Prelude-Gr.3. The 13-year-old North Bell missed to End Sweep last spring after gaining no issue with two more matings with Roryπs Jester.
