Damien Oliver collected a record fifth win in the Eat Well Live Well Stakes (the former Invitation Stakes/Show Day Cup), the race which placed him on the Gr.1 scoreboard 11 years earlier. His first win as an apprentice was Submariner, for the Bart Cummings stable rather than that of Lee Freedman, who enticed him from Perth. Oliver won on Mannerism (1992) and Poetic King ('94) for the Freedmans, the other success on Teta Rossa in 1999. Lee Freedman now heads the training pack, having also won with Encosta de Lago in 1996, his four taking him one ahead of Cummings, Tony Lopes and Des Judd. Mr Murphy came from barrier 13 and seventh on straightening to leave the other 17 with less than the usual excuses, although the third-placed Umrum appeared mainly beaten by his wide gate (17). Fubu reprised his strong Caulfield Guineas placing in second and Shot of Thunder gave another rare glimpse of his potential with a close fourth. One place farther back was the lone three-year-old Dash For Cash.

To collect his third Gr.1, Mr Murphy responded to a little sibling rivalry from his Woodman half-brother, Golden Fawn, an impressive winner of the Dulcify Stakes-LR a day earlier. Marscayπs Dream died in April last year, the daughter of Verdi leaving only males, albeit ones with abundant talent.
