Despite his terrific win in the Railway (when Northerly was beaten for the first time at Gr.1), the Lindsey Smith-trained Old Comrade might have found his defence of this race more difficult against his year-older compatriot at wfa. But Northerly, the reigning W.S. Cox Plate winner, was spelled after his jaded Railway 11th, paving the way for Old Comrade to again win this most oddly sponsor-named Gr.1 in Australia - the Fruit 'n' Veg Stakes (Ascot Stakes). Partnered as usual by Paul Harvey, Old Comrade again raced a little worse than midfield in around ninth and, as in the Railway, was covering extra ground out wide. Produced as soon as the field flattened for the run home, the 13/8 favourite soon had his rivals in trouble after heading off the pacemaker Miss Precisely. She fought on extremely well to give her sire Old Spice a 1-2 victory salute. Shot of Thunder charged home late to grab third, mirroring his effort in the Gr.1 Invitation Stakes at Caulfield in September. Having conquered the west, Old Comrade should be hunting in the eastern states in 2002. The Star Kingdom line horses are alive and well at this level, as also exemplified by recent Gr.1 winners Show a Heart and Desert Eagle.
