There was irony in that Old Comrade provided a belated first win in their home state's premier handicap for Bob and Sandra Peters. The former WATC chairman and his wife have been trying to win the Railway for years, coming closest when Foreman was second in 1995 and Old Comrade runner-up last year. The handicap had resided nearer year's end, when Old Comrade advanced off a win over Umrum in the Fruit ën' Veg (Ascot) Stakes to contest the race last year. The wfa Gr.1 win had sealed the young Old Spice warrior's stardom but Old Comrade was beaten in the 2000 Railway by Northerly, the year older Serheed gelding carrying just 51kg. Coming from his 2001 W.S. Cox Plate triumph which advanced his Gr.1 record to 5-5, Northerly had 61.5kg to contend with in defending his Railway title this year. It was too much and after Damien Oliver rode him outside the speed they finished 11th. Oliver must have known the game was up on the $2.25 favourite before Old Comrade rushed past on his outside nearing the 250m. Paul Harvey had been trapped wide on the $6 chance around midfield and from seventh at the 800m they stalked the leaders before dashing clear. Since foaling her dual Gr.1 winner, the Peters-bred Belgravia has presented the couple with a pair of fillies and pair of colts by Old Spice.
