Desert
Eagle was second emergency for the Cantala (Emirates) Stakes and Kerrin McEvoy
was down for third emergency Super Impressive overnight. When he chanced upon
Matthew Ellerton at the track, the 21 year-old asked Contract Racing's
conditioner to keep him in mind if only two emergences made the field (Show a
Heart and Market Ruler obliged by scratching). Despite the class rise, Desert
Eagle firmed to $15 and from the inside gate McEvoy tracked La Bella Dama.
Desert Eagle collared the surprise Mackinnon winner at the 100m, and stalled
off Emission to win by a half-neck. Ellerton called it: ěthe ride of the
carnivalî. La Bella Dama gamely held out La Zagaletta for third, Final Fantasy,
Crawl and Defier all closing late.
Egyptian
Ibis was an $80,000 purchase by David Moodie at the 1993 NZ Premier, her dam a
half-sister to Greatness and Ringtrue, Graded winners and Gr.1 placed. Another
sibling, Craig Win, was second to Imagele in the Rosehill Guineas. Raced by Moodie's
Contract Racing and a Shelley Hancox syndicate, Egyptian Ibis won at her first
two of nine starts, including the Listed Waltzing Lily. Apart from Desert Eagle
she has obligingly produced fillies to Dolphin Street, Catrail and Hurricane
Sky, plus a Hennessy colt. She lost her Zeditave colt soon after he was foaled.
