This win
made it eight Victoria Oaks winners for Bart Cummings who was just shy of his
74th birthday. Magical Miss was the most emphatic winner since Farmer's
Daughter won by six-lengths in 1966, two years after Cummings opened his scoring
with Light Fingers. Magical Miss is the 15th to win the 1000 Guineas (first run
1945) and Oaks. The previously successful filly was also the seventh for
Cummings. That was Richfield Lass who also landed 1991 Manifold and Wakeful
inviting the usual Light Fingers comparisons. Stephen Arnold smothered the $3
favourite in around fifth after being third early. Palidamah took over from
Warm Smytzer into the back and set a solid pace until overhauled by the winner
at the 280m. Magical Miss simply left them standing to win by five lengths.
Manang made up abundant ground to just cut the always-prominent Li Lo Lill out
of second. The 141st Oaks winner is bred on the same Danehill-Spectacular Bid
cross as Mozart, a European star of 2001. Magical Miss was a $520,000 Easter
Yearling Sale purchase for Bill and Rhonda Wyllie by Cummings. Tik Tik Trinidad
was the underbidder for Gooree principal Eduardo Cojuangco, for whom Manang
races. A sad postscript for Hooked Bid, the dam of Magical Miss who died after
missing to Secret Savings at Emirates Park. Cummings says the solidly-built
filly reminds him of Dane Ripper and anticipates she will also be up to wfa in
2002.
