La Bella Dama and Hill of Grace were just the third female quinella in a Mackinnon since the former Melbourne Stakes was first run in 1868. The Eric Connelly-prepared Anna Carlovna and Mountain Princess in 1913, and Tranquil Star and Flight at their first meeting in 1945. For the record, the 16th female winner advanced the number of wins by mares to 20 from 131 editions. The others are: 1872-Contessa, 96-Disfigured, 99-Mora, 1901-2-3 Wakeful, 04-Gladsome, 06-Solution, 13-Anna Carlovna, 15-Traquette, 35-Gay Blonde, 42 & 44-45-Tranquil Star, 74-Leilani, 88-Empire Rose, 89-Horlicks, 91-Let's Elope and 98-Champagne.

Although the track was hard, it played for on-pace runners and, following Graeme Rogerson's instructions to the letter, Scott Seamer ensured the mare was not headed, holding out the year older Hill of Grace by a long neck. Cinder Bella almost made it a trifecta of Kiwi distaffers in fourth. If the winner was a shock at $31 it was nothing compared to the failure of Universal Prince in 11th.

Rogerson races her with clients Denise and Christine Howell and Don McIlraith. Breeder Martin Connelly sold La Bella Dama as a foal for $900 when reducing his holdings on retirement, after more than 50 years as a butcher in Hamilton. He also sold Who''s That Lady for $1300, the mare subsequently onsold to Paul Smithies at $4000.
