Amalfi won the first Victoria Derby for Queensland, his owners Ron and Judy Wanless and trainer Peter Moody. The race also provided Carnegie success with his first runners in a longer-range classic. The Darley-owned Arc winner a shuttler between Shadai and Trelawney since 1997, the southern end also involving Haunui. Carnegie's other runner, Sircarn Damon, was fifth after being with the leaders 300m out. Amalfi ($6) is the least experienced Derby winner since Dulcify with five prior starts. He is also the fourth straight to win the Derby after placing in the Norman Robinson. He won the Caulfield prep, as had Omnicorp, Nothin' Leica Dane and Blackfriars. Damien Oliver cut things less fine in winning on Redding. He settled Amalfi ninth as The Bax Factor supplied a fairish tempo, increased at the 1400m by Tully Zeal, who brought them into the straight. Amalfi sixth at the 400m, two places below Keltrice son Zarek, victory talking until the final stride. The favourites, Ustinov ($2.35) and Viscount ($3.20) both jarred-up on the hard track and were sore after finishing fourth and seventh. Another Sadler's Wells son Scenic sired Blevic, his first crop runner restarting something in this Derby for the Northern Dancer tribe, now winners of five of the past eight. The lone success until then had been Dancer grandson Raveneaux, that 1986 winner sired Lady Durelle, dam of brave $61 longshot Zarek. Rationaine returned to Carnegie after yielding fillies to Groom Dancer, Tale of the Cat and Marju.
