In the words of the song, he was "simply the best".

Only a week after his Caulfield Cup triumph, Northerly had an amazingly easy victory in his second successive Cox Plate win. Greg Childs jumped  Sunline in front as usual with new rider Patrick Payne stalking on Northerly a couple of lengths back on the outside of Bel Esprit. Childs picked up the pace and the pressure on Sunline about 1000m out as she had done in her two Cox Plate wins but this time again she had Northerly to contend with. Rounding the turn Northerly ranged up to the mare and after a brief tussle shot two lengths clear and was never seriously challenged to hold off the good finishing performances of Defier and British horse Grandera.

There were disappointments. Bel Esprit could not compete and Lonhro who had missed the start and Fields of Omagh never got into contention.

Sunline battled on for fourth at her last start in a race and the great mare got as big an ovation as Northerly. She had nothing left to prove, retiring with a record of 43 starts for 32 wins, including 13 Group Ones, 12 placings and record Australasian earnings of $11,690,679. Northerly's victory took his earnings to $7,880,450, second only to Sunline, from 17 wins at 6 placings from 27 starts.  His record against Sunline stands at 3-0, and this season will see him given Horse of the Year status, an accolade some thought he deserved last season.

Fred Kearsley and his wife were humble in their triumph, and paid tribute to Sunline. The trainer who always has put his horse's wellbeing first, declined to subject his horse to a Melbourne Cup run under the crusher of 60kg.
