Northerly
is finally getting the accolades he has long deserved when he put in what was
probably his best ever performance in winning this year's Caulfield Cup. The
weight-for-age star proved himself under handicap conditions when he carried
58kg, the highest weight carried to victory for 20 years when Ming Dynasty
carried 60kg in beating Hyperno (59kg) and Kingston Town (60kg) in 1980. He was
also the first topweight to win since Tobin Bronze in 1967. Northerly has also
joined some great names in Tobin Bronze, Tulloch, Redcraze, Rising Fast, Might
and Power and Tranquil Star as the only horses in the last 60 years to have won
a Caulfield Cup and a Cox Plate.
Northerly
faced the breeze one out one back behind Tully Thunder the whole way until the
turn, taking the lead on the home turn and refusing to let anything past.
Fields of Omagh followed Northerly throughout but could not make any
impression. Republic Lass had a good run from midfield and finished well along
the fence for third.
There
were some good runs in the race. Distinctly Secret, whose run closed before him
when the pressure was applied, put in an outstanding Melbourne Cup trial to
rattle home fourth while English horse Beekeeper ran a slashing race from
midfield to finish on the heels of the placegetters in sixth place.
Jockey
Greg Childs, who has ridden Northerly six times for six wins, was ecstatic over
the horse and commented "he relaxed
beautifully. At the 700m I let him stride. The field got to him early in the
straight, but he dug deep and he was too good for them".
Well
fancied Universal Prince was disappointing and it has since been annouced the
2000 Australian Derby winning son of Scenic will be retired to stud.
