John Symons, trainer of the top class but luckless Bel Esprit, had a welcome change of luck when his Macedon Lady made up many lengths in a blistering finish to overwhelm the opposition in the 1000 Guineas-G1.

There have been many close finishes in feature events this spring, and again in this race, Macedon Lady just got there by a half head from the talented La Belle Dame. It was the filly's fourth win in only six starts, and will be headed for the remainder of the filly's classics this spring.

The favourite Victory Vein missed the start from her wide barrier (18) and was sharing last place in the big field until well into the straight. Jockey Beasley said he had to ride her for luck and when she finally got a run, she finished well along rails. The filly ran almost the same sectional time in the last 800m as the winner, and finished just behind the placegetters in seventh place in the 16-runner field.

Macedon Lady is the first stakes winner sired by the former outstanding galloper Filante, and completed a notable 3YO classic double for Widden Stud, for she and Caulfield Guineas-G1 winner Helenus were both sired by Widden Stud stallions.

Results of the two Group I classics run so far, the Caulfield Guineas and 1000 Guineas, have been a triumph for sales company William Inglis & Son, all six placegetters in the two events having been purchased through their Sydney sale ring in 2001 at either the Classic or Australian Easter Sales.
