Shot of
Thunder collared Scenic Peak and the pacemaker Umrum in the last stages of a
spine tingling finish to provide former footballer John O'Shea with his first
Group I success, after only three years as a trainer at the age of 33 years.
For jockey Glen Boss it was a triumphant return from a serious neck injury
sustained in Macau in June, to repeat his Toorak success of last year with Show
a Heart.
Shot of
Thunder, a handsome individual who proved one of the best of his age in Perth
last season, was purchased by a syndicate to stand at Glenlogan Stud in
Queensland next spring and a Group I success was an obvious target. He landed a
betting plunge when he was backed from 6-1 to 15-4 favourite.
It was a
desperately close finish and second placed Scenic Peak lost the position in a double
protest by Umrum and Pernod, each moving up a place for second and third
respectively.
A
feature of the race was the bold showing of eight-year-old campaigner Umrum,
who tried to lead all the way at his fifth Toorak attempt. Umrum ran third in the race in 1998 and was
the winner in 1999 and 2000. Unlucky runner was Chairman's Choice who suffered
severe interference in the straight and his run into fifth place just behind
the placegetters was outstanding.
