Hailed as a match race, so often resulting in a boilover, champion mare Sunline and her younger challenger Lonhro did not disappoint. The race was run predictably, with Sunline back to her amazonic brilliant best setting a strong pace in front with Lonhro sitting outside of Ustinov a few lengths behind.

Well into the straight about 300m out, Beadman called on Lonhro for his finishing effort. With Sunline going strongly a couple of lengths clear Lonhro's overhaul was steady and gradual making for an exciting finish. With both horses striving in the most gallant fashion, the stallion made the ground in time to collar the mare in the last few strides.

Lonhro's stamina over 2000m was questioned before the race as he had never won beyond a mile before this acid test, but the horse came through with flying colours in the fast time of 2m 0.6s.

Sunline was gallant in defeat and proved she was back to her best for her swan song and a re-match with Lonhro, Northerly, Defier and other outstanding contenders in the Cox Plate.
