While
nothing can detract from a sterling performance by the exciting Helenus to win
the Caulfield Guineas-G1 in race record time, the most oustanding run was by
the unlucky Bel Esprit, who registered his third successive second placing in
Group I events.
Bel
Esprit drew barrier 15 in the capacity field and was a clear last all the way
to the turn. His run from near last to second, after suffering a severe check
in the straight, was as good a performance as any three-year-old has put up
this season.
The
wayward Choisir ran his best race for some time, setting a sizzling pace which
largely accounted for the race record. He finished on gallantly for third a
short neck behind Bel Esprit.
Helenus
gave Bart Cummings' former stable foreman Leon Corstens his greatest thrill as
a trainer. Although he has had two previous Group I successes with Cherontessa
in an Australasian Oaks and Lord Luskin in an Invitation Stakes, Corstens was
in tears after the race and rated Helenus easily the best horse he has trained.
Helenus
is the first Group I winner, and indeed only the second stakes winner sired by
the 1996 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-G1 winner, Helissio, who got the Guineas
winner during his one season of service at Widden Stud.
An
$80,000 Australian Easter Sale yearling, when selected by Leon Corstens' son,
Troy, Helenus is raced by Dr John Zipell and his wife Thecthla whose father
Wally Broderick raced the Cummings trained champion Light Fingers, winner of
the 1965 Melbourne Cup.
