<F"Times New Roman"P6>Dan Beasley just missed a Group I success with Victory Vein, but compensated with another Victory in the Metropolitan with 40-1 outsider Victory Smile. Although there looked to be many chances at the top of the rise, the New Zealand gelding who had travelled well all the way, stormed down the outside to win comfortably from an unlucky Piachay and the Waterhouse trained favourite, last year's winner, Dress Circle.

Another Waterhouse trained galloper Red Trinket put up an eyecatching run, finishing brilliantly from last on the turn for fourth.

It was the first Australian Group I win for excited Ruakaka trainer Donna Logan, who put the polish on last season's champion New Zealand three-year-old filly, Vapour Trail. She had brought Victory Smile to Queensland last winter for a win in the Caloundra Cup and a placing in the Group 3 Ipswich Cup.

A much improved stayer, Victory Smile was suited by the genuine pace and on a good track ran the 2400m in a race record time of 2.31.30.
