In a
typical staying effort, Platinum Scissors with his big loping strides came from
last turning for home to win the Spring Champion Stakes-G1 in a photo finish of
the filly Soprana.
Trainer
Gai Waterhouse commented that Platinum Scissors had taken a long time to mature
and showed little ability as a two-year-old, much to the dismay of his
connections, but after a long spell he made rapid improvement. The colt had his
first start only eight weeks before and this Group I win was at only his sixth
race start.
The
immensely promising Soprana, fought on bravely and failed narrowly to hold out
the big colt.
Platinum
Scissors had two Group 2 seconds in his lead up races, firstly to Lonhro in the
Chelmsford Stakes and then failing by only a short neck behind Maskerado in the
Gloaming. In the Champion, Maskerado, another lightly raced horse, ran well for
third but was safely held by the first two.
Platinum
Scissors is a full brother to former champion miler Redoute's Choice, but is a very
different type. By the end of October he had another Group race win in
Melbourne under his belt and was pre post favourite for the Victoria Derby.
