Last year's champion two-year-old Victory Vein had not put a hoof wrong this spring, and was a hot favourite to remain unbeaten for the season in the Flight Stakes-G1 to her fourth start this season.

It was not to be and Victory Vein had to lower her colours to an outsider in Royal Purler. The latter filly settled comfortably in front with Victory Vein looking to be travelling easily just behind, and when Danny Beasley called upon for her usual finish she ran to the leader and got a neck in front 100 metres out. With Royal Purler fighting back, Victory Vein died on her run and she was outstayed in the run to the post, losing by a short neck.

Jockey Patrick Payne rode a well judged front running race on the winner enabling her to fight on strongly, and give Warwick Farm trainer George Hickman his first Group I success.

Private Steer who had so brilliantly won the listed Reginald Allen Handicap at her previous start finished very strongly down the outside to gain third placing in the Group I event at only her fourth start.
