Excellerator confirmed that he was back to his best two-year-old form with a sterling win in the Group I Epsom Handicap. Trained by Gai Waterhouse, the gelding who had not won as a three-year-old, was too good for a top quality field.

The race was full of incidents, not the least when Excellerator with Jim Cassidy aboard manhandled his stablemate Kingsgate to get out of a pocket. Kingsgate regrouped and finished on to run a courageous second. If the margin of two and a half-lengths been less, there could have been grounds for a protest.

Many of the fancied runners were disappointing, not the least being Defier who showed little of the brilliance he displayed in defeating Excellerator and Sunline in the George Main-G1 at his previous start, although he finished on when getting clear of a traffic jam in the straight. Shogun Lodge and Universal Prince were well supported back runners expected to run on, but neither figured in the finish.

Following the Epsom, Excellerator was sent to Melbourne for a tilt at the Toorak Handicap-G1, but was scratched with tendon trouble a couple of days before the race. A quick recovery saw him run again for an excellent third in the Waterford Crystal Mile, prizemoney from this run taking his earnings past $2 million.

Excellerator became the 12th Group I winner sire by the deceased Marscay. Unfortunately, like many of Marscay's better progeny, he is a gelding precluding the opportunity of furthering Australia's great Star Kingdom sire line.
