TRAGEDY struck at this year's Brisbane Cup when the favouite Maguire shattered a hind leg when third in the running and was later euthanised on course. Jockey Chris Munce did a remarkable job to hold the horse on his feet, as the rest of the field avoided the stricken runner.

Glen Boss achieved a rare double to land Piachay the winner after being victorious on Private Steer in the Gr.1 Stradbroke Handicap. Piachay had shown good form during the carnival and finished strongly to overpower County Tyrone in the drive to the post. Homewrecker ran well for third but was no match for the first two.

Several runners were slightly inconvenienced when Maguire broke down (including Homewrecker) but it is doubtful if the result was affected. The 2002 Sydney Cup winner Henderson Bay pulled up sore after finishing well back and well supported Corporate Queen bled during the race and has been barred for the mandatory period of 3 months.

Piachay (a son of Danasinga) appears to be the the first 3200 metres winner from the Danehill sire line, and sons of Danehill achieved a quinella with the luckless County Tyrone running second. The latter has finished runner-up at his last three starts including a hard fought second in the 3200 metres Sydney Cup.
