HALF HENNESSY made the rest of the field look ordinary in a triumphant victory in the Queensland Derby. Half Hennessy over raced a bit early when General Minolta went out with a long lead but when the pace quickened he relaxed and settled midfield. Schumpeter, who had also run well in the South Australian Derby, took the field up to General Minolta and did well to hang on for second, but he was no match for Half Hennessy's blitzkreig coming up on his outside and was six lengths in arrears at the finish. King of Them All, a first crop son of Ideal Planet's half-brother Royal Sceptre (by Bletchingly), was close up in third place and The Jewel, who backed up after her second in the Oaks the previous week, ran well for fourth.

Half Hennessy was a promising two-year-old when he won the Illawarra Classic-Gr.3 and ran second in the Champagne Stakes-Gr.1 and Heroic Championship. After an early Group victory he disappointed in Melbourne in the spring but has come good with a vengeance at the Brisbane carnival, winning Grand Prix-Gr.2 as well as the Derby. Scott Seamer made it a double Derby success having partnered Clangalang to victory in the Australian Derby last month.

The recent success of runners like Half Hennessy and Grand Armee has prompted Coolmore to make their sire Hennessy a late addition to the 2003 shuttle list and he will join his son Johannesburg at Jerrys Plains.
