PRIVATE STEER ranks as one of the most exciting horses racing in Australia after her scintillating win in the Stradbroke, becoming the first three-year-old filly to win this race since Dane Ripper in 1997. Dane Ripper went on to win the Cox Plate and gain Horse of the Year honours as a four-year-old. The road to the Toorak and the Cox Plate is the likely course to be taken by trainer John O'Shea with his star performer.

Private Steer started a clear favourite after her terrific run into second in the weight-for-age Doomben 10,000. This time under handicap conditions she has to carry only 48kg and her rider Glen Boss shed 3kg to ride her at that weight. Private Steer settled about ninth in another big field led by NZ star Tit for Taat. Much-travelled Into the Night, who ran a creditable race from a wide barrier, took the field up to lead into the straight and held on well for second, but was swamped by Private Steer. Diamond Dane followed Private Steer through and finished on for third.

The racing public said goodbye to local champion Falvelon, who could finish only ninth, and Bel Esprit. Falvelon is to stand at Glenlogan Park Stud at Beaudesert, and this popular horse is sure to have plenty of support in his new role.
